During the 2017/18 academic year, Memorial School principal, Alysson Keelen and Howell Township Green Team member, Mary Ann Cernak, jointly developed and implemented an innovative community project which enabled both the school and the Green Team to qualify for points in respective Sustainable Jersey Green applications/recertification.
Fifth grade Student Council Members, under the leadership of teachers, Dominick Cinelli and Lauren Cardella, engaged in 2 separate projects designed to educate community members about the environmental impact of plastic bottles and increase numbers of plastic bottles recycled by students and senior citizens. Mary Ann Cernak developed and delivered a presentation to Student Council members about the environmental impact of plastic bottles on December 18, 2017.
One group of student council members developed posters designed to both educate all students about the environmental impact of plastic bottles and also to increase their use of school recycling bins. Posters were displayed throughout the school. A second group of student council members developed a flyer to explain the environmental impact of plastic bottles and increase the numbers of plastic bottles recycled by township senior citizens. Information about the project and distribution of the flyer was shared at the Howell Senior Center by student council members.
Poster Winners were:
- Annabel Ramos
- Daria Khaliullina

Winning posters, the flyer, and students’ recommendations will be shared with representatives from the Howell Township Green Team and Environmental Commissions at the Student Council meeting @ Memorial School when student council members will receive certificates for participation.
