[ARCHIVED] Hurricane Preparedness Week

Dear Residents:

This week is Hurricane Preparedness Week and as such, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released its annual outlook on the summer Atlantic hurricane season. http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/outlooks/hurricane.shtml

According to reports, “technically it will be active or extremely active hurricane season. It’s important to remember that NOAA is only predicting whether or not hurricanes and tropical storms will develop—not whether they will make landfall like Super storm Sandy did last fall. Only three of the 19 named storms that formed in the Atlantic last year made enough of an impact on the U.S. to cause any real damage. Most storms form in the Atlantic and never leave. It’s not just the strength of a storm that makes it dangerous—it’s location. Super storm Sandy made that clear”.
Howell Township Office of Emergency Management urges all residents to be prepared. The more prepared we are, the more educated we are, and the more realistic we are will help take the edge off a “disaster.”
In addition, we encourage everyone to visit Howell Township Office of Emergency Management page http://www.twp.howell.nj.us/index.aspx?NID=330 for disaster preparations or visit www.Ready.gov. & www.Fema.gov for detailed list of emergency supplies, as well as information on how to prepare for hurricanes and other disasters.
Lastly, Howell Township residents should register or update your cell phone for our Global Connect Alert System.
Global Connect – Global Connect is a free, voluntary and confidential emergency alerting system that allows Emergency Management or Howell Police to send telephone calls to residents and businesses, and E-mail or text messages to cell phones and other enabled devices during an emergency event. Sign up for Global Connect by logging on to http://www.twp.howell.nj.us/index.aspx?NID=346
Residents with a special need and/or their caregivers can log on to www.registerready.nj.gov and sign up for the free, voluntary and confidential special needs registry. By registering, first responders will be given the ability to prepare, locate and assist those with a special need during emergencies and disasters.
Sincerely,

Helene Schlegel. OEM Coordinator
