The students, faculty, directors, and parents and friends of the Pascack Valley Learning Center in Airmont, New York wish to convey the inspiration behind the publishing of this book Surviving Sandy, and their gratitude to all who spent countless hours to build this amazing publication.

Pascack Valley Learning Center is a school of Sterling Education. Sterling is a grades 3-12 learning institution teaching the skills of “Learning to learn” using high-quality instructors, video conferencing, and self-directed learning techniques. An integral part of Sterling’s educational program is teaching young people the importance of community outreach.

Pascack Valley’s student body includes young people from New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut – all areas pummeled by Superstorm Sandy.

In November, 2012 following the destruction caused by Sandy’s onslaught, our school community was moved to help the victims. An upcoming “bake sale” fundraiser, originally planned to raise funds for the school, was unselfishly transformed, by the students, into a fundraiser for Sandy victims.

This was coupled with a neighborhood clothing drive, and the clothing, toys, and other items donated by the wider community were given to United Way and People to People for distribution. The bake sale raised $2,800 for the Red Cross.

Following this success, and an outpouring of community support for organizing these charitable efforts, the School recognized an opportunity to raise further relief funds by publishing a book documenting the storm and the challenges faced by government agencies and private citizens alike in preparing for, surviving, and recovering from, the havoc it caused.

After countless hours of volunteer work by students, parents, and friends of the school - collecting stories, doing research, and assembling pictures - this premium documentary is now ready for publication by Pascack Valley Learning Center’s charitable fundraising arm: Ambient Funding.

Proceeds from the sale of this masterful work will be donated to the charities supporting the ongoing recovery and rebuilding operations.
