Open Public Records Act (OPRA)
This law was created under the direction of former Governor James McGreevey to allow the public to have access to most public records. There are specific guidelines to request information and/or have access to public records. They also must be addressed within a very rigid time frame.
The Governor’s Office has precluded specific items that are not accessible to the public, police records to name one, but there are several others. All public records requests are initially and ultimately handled by the Clerk’s office. All OPRA requests are researched and sent to the proper department for specific information and are time sensitive. Public records must be addressed and accounted for within a specific time frame for the requesting party.
